A lot of people do an "About Me" page, so I decided to do one as well, but really, it turned out that I had either nothing or too much to say (I think the latter) and so instead I have decided on a "Random Page" that will be periodically updated for no good reason!

Finally getting around to updating this a little bit, I know it's been forever since I've done anything with it, but things have been very busy everywhere, ad I haven’t had a lot of time to work on PD's. I admit some of it is because when I do get free time I have been devoting it to art media pictures and rather enjoying it too, might I add. I actually started it when i couldn't find what I wanted for wallpaper for my MySpace Page and I haven't looked back since.

The art media is a function in Paint Shop Pro that simulates oil paint (and a variety of other mediums). I hand draw the picture first, scan it into Paint Shop Pro and from there hand - or mouse - paint it. It’s exceedingly time consuming (it takes me nearly a month for each picture) but the results are rather stunning, I think. Though I am not quite up to where I can create with it what I can with a pencil on paper, but each picture I do is better than the one before, so it is improving, anyway.

And before anyone starts in - like my brother does - these are harder to do on the PC than they would be on paper. You trade off the speed for the undo function and the ability to use layers - and each of those feathers on the wings? No, I don’t have a filter or plug in that does that. Each feather is hand placed.

This brings me to a topic for my Random page - computer art. My brother is big on saying it’s not real art, that the programs do it all for you. And maybe there are programs that do that (some of the 3-D maybe? I admit, I know very little about 3-D art) but I can tell him the 2-D programs certainly don't. Sure, if you have picture tubes, filters, textures etc you can create a picture without ever drawing a thing, but someone had to draw those picture tubes. The original art had to come from somewhere. There is no filter that draws it for you!

My husband does some 3-D modeling (I believe that’s what you call it?) but nothing big, just an object here or there, he doesn’t really create pictures with it. Now I suppose people could argue that 3-D art wasn’t art since it requires no ingrained ability to hold a pencil or a brush, but I think it depends on the content of the picture to me. Art is something very hard to define.

But this does create a problem for those of us who can draw - we are becoming superfluous. Someone can click a mouse and make things in 3-D that look more real than what we draw and suddenly we aren’t necessary anymore. I suppose artists felt the same way when the camera became wide spread, and obviously they haven’t been outmoded yet by it, so I am sure that this won’t really do away with us either. I guess its just human nature to worry about change! After all, the actors, animators and set designers are in a lot more danger than we are right now thanks to computer graphics!
